Banza: Brian Rudolph. The Chickpea Pasta That Nearly Turned to Mush
How I Built This with Guy Raz
Brian Rudolph built Banza into a leading pasta brand by leveraging the nutritional and environmental benefits of chickpeas. Initially motivated by his own wheat sensitivity, Rudolph navigated significant manufacturing hurdles, including early production failures that forced him to innovate cooking methods and secure more reliable supply chains. The company’s rapid growth, fueled by distinctive orange packaging and strategic retail partnerships, faced a major setback when an advocacy group alleged the presence of glyphosate in their products. This crisis prompted a shift toward rigorous supply chain transparency and third-party testing to restore consumer trust. Today, Banza continues to expand its product line while maintaining its core mission of providing nutrient-dense alternatives to traditional wheat-based staples, demonstrating the importance of resilience and accountability in scaling a food business.
