Life transitions are fundamentally nonlinear, meaning-making experiences rather than predictable stages on a straight path. The average person encounters three to five "lifequakes"—massive bursts of upheaval—during their lifetime, totaling nearly half of their adult years in transition. Mastering these periods requires moving beyond the outdated "linear life" model and treating change as a learnable skill. Effective navigation involves identifying one's transition "superpower," accepting difficult emotions like fear and shame, and engaging in creative acts to shed old habits. By viewing these periods as "autobiographical occasions," individuals can rewrite their life stories, transforming painful disruptions into opportunities for renewal. This process of intentional storytelling, exemplified by the simple act of asking life-affirming questions, allows individuals to reclaim agency and emerge as the heroes of their own narratives, even amidst profound personal or collective crises.
