Getting Out of Hell and Into Reality – Episode 120
A Podcast with Charlie Swenson - To Hell and Back
Being in contact with reality serves as a fundamental strategy for overcoming suffering and maximizing life quality. Humans frequently drift away from the present moment by constructing internal narratives—stories about themselves, others, and the future—that function as "scams" generated by the brain. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) provides concrete mindfulness skills to anchor individuals in the immediate experience: observing, describing, and participating. These practices, alongside "how" skills like non-judgmental awareness, one-mindful focus, and effectiveness, help strip away distorting judgments. Furthermore, techniques such as radical acceptance and checking the facts allow individuals to distinguish between objective reality and emotional interpretations. By consistently returning to the present, one can move past habitual, story-driven reactions toward a more compassionate, moral, and effective way of living.
