Anxious Attachment: How to Stop Assuming the Worst in Your Relationship | Psychologist Explains

Podcast cover

Dr. Maika Steinborn

Anxious attachment often triggers catastrophic interpretations of relationship events, driven by the fundamental attribution error—the tendency to attribute negative intent or character flaws to a partner while ignoring situational factors. Managing these triggers requires a three-step cognitive behavioral therapy approach: identifying the anxiety-driven explanation, generating alternative explanations rooted in safety and trust, and mentally rehearsing the most likely secure explanation until the physiological anxiety subsides. Common scenarios, such as a partner’s delayed text response, perceived distraction during conversation, or a request for alone time, often stem from benign factors like work stress, overstimulation, or different communication styles rather than a lack of love or impending abandonment. By consciously shifting from fear-based perspectives to those grounded in secure attachment, individuals can soothe their nervous systems and prevent personal insecurities from burdening their relationships.
