Gold is No Longer Just an Inflation Hedge

Podcast cover

Gold and silver are experiencing a structural shift driven by a "sovereignty premium," where the value of an asset lies in its independence from any specific government or institution. Unlike inflation, which concerns purchasing power, monetary sovereignty focuses on the control, access, and trust of financial systems. This trend accelerated following the 2022 freezing of Russian assets, which demonstrated that traditional reserve assets like US Treasuries can be revoked. Consequently, global central banks in countries such as China, Poland, Turkey, and India have doubled their annual gold purchases to approximately 1,000 tons. While the US dollar remains the primary reserve currency due to a lack of viable alternatives, nations are increasingly utilizing physical gold held within their own borders as a strategic hedge. This shift represents a move toward diversifying options rather than a full retreat from the dollar-based global financial system.
