Shoulder hypertrophy relies on mechanical tension and effective progressive overload rather than subjective feelings of muscle activation. While common cues like "scooping sand" aim to isolate the side delts by minimizing trap involvement, biomechanical reality dictates that scapular elevation is a natural component of shoulder abduction, meaning traps cannot fully "rob" the delts of tension. Furthermore, EMG readings often fail to predict long-term muscle growth, rendering some isolation-focused cues less impactful than consistent, high-intensity training. Progressive overload remains the primary driver of growth, though linear progression on isolation movements is often unrealistic for advanced lifters. Instead, utilizing double progression and maintaining specific exercises long-term allows for more accurate tracking of strength gains, which serve as a reliable proxy for muscle size increases. Training across multiple planes to target the seven distinct inframuscular segments of the deltoid provides a more comprehensive approach to building 3D shoulders.
