The Best Triceps Exercises For Hypertrophy (Based on Science)

Podcast cover

Dr. Milo Wolf

Maximizing tricep hypertrophy requires prioritizing exercises that provide significant stretch and tension while maintaining high task specificity. The triceps, consisting of the long, lateral, and medial heads, respond best to movements that isolate elbow extension without interference from other muscle groups. Research indicates that the long head, the largest component, benefits most from overhead extensions, which provide a full stretch at the shoulder. While compound movements like the bench press are effective for overall strength, they are less efficient for targeted tricep growth compared to isolation exercises like the Smith Machine JM Press and dumbbell skull crushers. A hierarchy of training suggests that overhead movements offer superior stimulus, followed by skull crushers, with the JM press serving as an excellent option for lateral and medial head development. Aligning task failure with muscular failure remains the most effective strategy for building size.
