Modular data centers, often termed "Lego data centers," represent a shift from traditional on-site construction to off-site prefabrication, significantly reducing build times and addressing critical labor shortages. By moving mechanical and electrical assembly into factory environments, developers achieve greater predictability and faster time-to-power, which is essential given the high opportunity costs of delayed AI compute deployment. While modularization offers clear advantages in scalability and speed, it introduces unique risks, including complex logistics, insurance challenges, and the difficulty of on-site commissioning. The industry is currently navigating a transition where Original Equipment Manufacturers and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction integrators are scaling manufacturing capacity to meet massive demand. Ultimately, modularization serves as a strategic response to the inelastic supply of specialized labor and the urgent need for rapid, reliable data center infrastructure in an era of intense compute demand.
