The inheritance of acquired traits, long considered a biological impossibility due to the separation of somatic and germ cells, finds new potential through RNA-mediated mechanisms. Dr. Oded Rechavi explains that while the Weismann barrier prevents most somatic changes from reaching the germline, studies in *C. elegans* reveal that small RNAs can carry environmental information—such as viral resistance—across generations. These small RNAs effectively bypass traditional genetic constraints by silencing specific genes in offspring. Although the human brain relies on synaptic plasticity rather than direct molecular inheritance, the capacity for RNA to influence gene expression suggests a potential, albeit unproven, role in transgenerational adaptation. This research challenges the rigid view of genetic inheritance and opens new avenues for understanding how environmental experiences might biologically impact future generations through molecular signaling rather than just DNA sequence changes.
