Human beings forget approximately 90% of their dreams due to the specific biological mechanics of the brain during sleep. The hippocampus, responsible for transferring information from short-term to long-term memory, is one of the last regions to deactivate and requires approximately two minutes of wakefulness to re-engage. Consequently, most sleepers do not remain awake long enough for the hippocampus to encode dream experiences. This lack of retention is further compounded by a dramatic drop in the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and noradrenaline during sleep, which prevents the brain from saving dream data despite high levels of mental activity. However, dream recall can be improved through behavioral factors; individuals who wake frequently for longer durations, engage in discussions about their dreams, or consciously value dream content demonstrate significantly higher rates of both short-term and long-term recall.
