Bullying is a deliberately targeted, serial, and escalating pattern of attacks intended to destroy a person's reputation and ability to contribute. Unlike conflict or debate, bullying relies on an audience to sustain its power. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy, who faced a years-long campaign of professional bullying following her viral TED Talk, emphasizes that bullies operate on a zero-sum worldview where others' achievements represent their own loss. To dismantle these toxic dynamics, individuals must practice "social bravery"—small, collective acts of intervention that disrupt the bully's test of the audience. Because bullying is a collective problem rather than a personal one, refusing to participate or validate the bully's narrative effectively renders them impotent. Ultimately, fostering environments of trust and support, rather than responding to cruelty with further aggression, is essential to restoring healthy social norms and preventing the hardening of abusive cultures.
