Whole blood has made a remarkable comeback in trauma resuscitation. Physiologically, the rationale is compelling, and observational studies have suggested improved survival. But the recent randomized TOWAR and SWiFT trials have challenged the assumption that whole blood is clearly superior to component therapy.
