How to break the link between real and reflected consciousness in practising Drg Drshya Viveka?
Vedanta Society of New York
Advaita Vedanta posits that the connection between the ego, the body-mind, and reflected consciousness is a natural byproduct of birth and past karma, rather than an inherent truth. While individuals often find solace in detaching from insults by identifying as the witness consciousness, this perspective also challenges the value of personal love and external validation. True realization involves recognizing that the ego is merely a mirror reflecting consciousness, not the Self itself. By shifting focus from the limited personality to the limitless witness consciousness, one transcends the need for external approval. This state of being fosters unconditional love, as the individual recognizes their fundamental oneness with all others. Stories of figures like Ramana Maharshi and Swami Vivekananda illustrate that when one is anchored in their true nature, both criticism and praise become irrelevant, replaced by a state of limitless existence and bliss.
