Battery technology is entering a new phase of market fragmentation where specific chemistries are tailored to distinct applications rather than competing for a single dominant role. Sodium-ion batteries, once dismissed as low-energy laboratory experiments, are now reaching mass production with costs approaching $51 per kilowatt-hour. Their adoption of dual-aluminum foil current collectors and polyanion cathodes provides critical advantages in thermal stability, safety, and material abundance compared to traditional lithium-ion cells. While lithium-ion remains the standard for high-performance electric vehicles requiring maximum energy density, sodium-ion is emerging as the optimal solution for stationary energy storage and the rapidly expanding infrastructure of AI data centers. Major financial institutions now model sodium-ion as a mainstream technology, projecting it to capture over a third of the global battery market by the mid-2030s, fundamentally shifting the economics of the global energy transition.
