What's the biggest barrier to thriving? A philosopher and a space architect answer | Ariel Ekblaw and Meghan Sullivan
TED Talks Daily
The common good functions as an aspirational goal rather than a compromise, requiring humanity to move collectively toward a better future. Space exploration serves as a catalyst for this progress, as the constraints of orbital habitats force us to solve complex problems that yield tangible benefits for life on Earth. Achieving human thriving demands intentionality and a rejection of the cynical Hobbesian view of human nature in favor of a more honorable, elevated version of ourselves. Strengthening foundational institutions—such as education, community service, and media—is critical to fostering social cohesion and character development. By prioritizing the "golden rule" and committing to see others beyond initial assumptions, we can design systems that cultivate the best in one another, both in the cramped environments of space and within our societies on the ground.
