The Truth About India’s Jobs Crisis

India faces a severe jobs crisis characterized by high youth unemployment, with only 47% of 20-to-29-year-olds currently employed. Despite a massive demographic dividend, the economy struggles to absorb educated youth because of a persistent mismatch between academic credentials and market-relevant skills. While structural transformation has largely moved young people out of agriculture, the manufacturing sector remains concentrated in a few prosperous states, failing to provide the necessary scale of employment in the northern regions. Furthermore, spatial constraints—specifically the lack of affordable urban housing and safe hostels for women—severely limit labor mobility.
