Grounding in PC boards is fundamentally about safety and shielding, not creating a zero-volt sink for noise. Energy travels through the dielectric space between traces and planes, not within the copper itself, making the management of this space critical for signal integrity and EMI control. High-frequency return currents naturally follow the path of lowest impedance, which is directly beneath the signal trace. Consequently, routing signals across splits in ground planes or through thick dielectrics in four-layer boards significantly increases EMI by forcing fields to spread. Effective design requires maintaining proximity between signal and return paths, grouping components by function, and utilizing stack-ups that ensure every signal layer references a solid ground plane. Proper decoupling and the strategic use of copper pours further reduce plane inductance and improve overall board performance.
