Relocate or Move On from the Middle East || Peter Zeihan

The United States faces a strategic crisis in the Middle East as Iranian drone technology renders traditional regional military bases vulnerable. These "memory drones" utilize onboard decision trees to select targets upon arrival, making them immune to electronic jamming and capable of striking high-value infrastructure with extreme precision. While Patriot missile systems can intercept these threats, the economic and industrial disparity is unsustainable: the U.S. produces only a dozen interceptors weekly compared to Iran’s capacity to assemble thousands of drones. Proposed plans to relocate facilities to Jordan or Israel offer no protection, as Iranian drone ranges already exceed 600 miles and continue to expand. Consequently, a broad-scale American withdrawal from the region appears inevitable unless the U.S. develops a more cost-effective interceptor solution to counter the proliferation of long-range, autonomous drone warfare.
