APEST: Identifying and Training Future Leaders (Eph 5.11-13)

Effective church planting requires balancing the apostolic drive for expansion with the shepherd-teacher focus on depth and stability. The APEST model categorizes these functions, with apostles, prophets, and evangelists prioritizing entry and gospeling, while shepherds and teachers anchor discipleship and church formation. Success hinges on identifying and equipping leaders in the "sweet spot" of leadership development, where both groups contribute to reproducing the process. A critical tension exists between these roles, requiring mutual respect and release: apostles must trust the stability provided by teachers, and teachers must allow apostles to move forward without restriction. Utilizing the MAWL (Model, Assist, Watch, Leave) framework enables leaders to effectively train others, ensuring that as ministries broaden, the focus remains on raising up future leaders from the harvest to sustain long-term growth.
