What Is the Outlook for Diesel and Gasoline Supplies?

Podcast cover

The Markets

Global commodity markets remain surprisingly resilient despite the six-month closure of the Strait of Hormuz and prolonged geopolitical conflicts in Europe. Nitin Jindal, head of global commodities at Goldman Sachs, observes that while crude oil inventories have declined, the market has successfully navigated the high-demand summer window without a breaking point. However, the refined products market remains critically tight due to supply reductions from the Persian Gulf, Russia, and China. China’s rapid transition to electric vehicles and massive solar capacity installations—adding 500 gigawatts last year compared to 50 in the U.S.—has enabled significant demand destruction and fuel switching. Looking ahead, European energy security this winter depends heavily on weather patterns; a normal winter could force intense competition between Europe and China for limited LNG and coal supplies. Current strategic opportunities include long positions in crack spreads, Asian hydrocarbons over U.S. counterparts, and gold as a debasement trade.
