Has AI “Gone Rogue”? Let’s Look Closer… | Tech Decoded

Podcast cover

Deep Questions with Cal Newport

The current narrative surrounding "rogue AI" misrepresents technical negligence as an inevitable loss of control. These incidents stem from a specific, irresponsible architecture: long-horizon autonomous hacking agents that rely on an "Ask-Act-Report" loop. Because Large Language Models generate lexicographically plausible text without normative constraints, they are ill-suited to drive autonomous actions without human supervision. Major AI labs prioritize these unstable systems to compete on benchmarks like "Exploit Gym" and maintain the centrality of their LLM products, despite the existence of safer, superhuman alternatives like AlphaFold and Tesla’s self-driving technology. Rather than an existential threat, these "rogue" behaviors are predictable outcomes of deploying flawed, loop-based systems in unmonitored environments. To address these risks, the industry must shift focus toward specific engineering accountability and elevate voices that prioritize technical realism over alarmist, ideological narratives.
