Stop Wasting Your Energy: How to Deal With People Who Won’t Change & What to Do Instead
The Mel Robbins Podcast
People often struggle to change because of two mental "bodyguards": energy conservation and ego protection. These mechanisms keep individuals on autopilot and defensive, creating a persistent gap between knowing better and doing better. Moving from a "good person" mindset—which focuses on proving one's identity—to a "good-ish" mindset allows for continuous growth and learning. Instead of pushing others to change, which often triggers resistance, effective influence involves modeling change, inviting it through small, recognized attempts, and rewarding progress. When addressing interpersonal conflicts, shifting from unsolicited advice to identifying whether someone needs to be heard, hugged, helped, or high-fived reduces friction. Furthermore, replacing vague feedback with specific behavioral observations and applying the "1 to 10" importance scale helps navigate disagreements, ultimately fostering more productive, compassionate relationships.
