AEE 2677: Conversation Coaching Part 2: Keep the Conversation Going
All Ears English Podcast
Maintaining engagement in English conversations requires active strategies to prevent awkward silences and avoid becoming a "Me Monster" who dominates the dialogue. Redirecting the conversation back to the other person is essential for building connection. Versatile phrases such as "What about you?" and "How about you?" serve as effective tools to invite responses, while "What do you think?" specifically encourages the sharing of opinions on current events or topics. Intonation plays a critical role in these exchanges, as does repeating the original question to ensure clarity. While "And you?" offers a more formal alternative, these techniques remain interchangeable in most casual settings. Prioritizing connection over perfection allows speakers to navigate social interactions smoothly, pivot away from uncomfortable subjects, and foster a balanced, back-and-forth flow that keeps communication dynamic and inclusive.
