Series 1 Ep #20 Shame

Podcast cover

Emotion Focused Podcast

Shame functions as a painful, self-conscious emotion that targets the core self rather than specific actions, often leading to paralysis and a desire to hide. Unlike guilt, which motivates repair, shame is biologically wired to protect individuals within a group, a survival mechanism that frequently becomes maladaptive in modern, individualistic cultures. Dr. Shigeru Iwakabe, a professor of clinical psychology and expert in Emotion Focused Therapy, highlights that shame is particularly prevalent in collective societies like Japan. Healing involves transforming this internal sense of defectiveness into self-compassion or pride. This process requires externalizing the shame and experiencing an affirming, non-judgmental connection with another person, which validates the individual’s true self beyond their perceived flaws. By shifting the focus from internal shame to externalizing past mistreatment, individuals can begin to reclaim their sense of value and agency.
