Northern Ireland descended into a low-level civil war between 1970 and 1971, driven by the emergence of the Provisional IRA and the catastrophic failure of British political interventions. Prime Minister Ted Heath and Home Secretary Reginald Maudling, largely ignorant of the region's complexities, oversaw a series of miscalculations, including the disastrous Falls Road curfew and the implementation of internment under Operation Demetrius. These actions alienated the Catholic population, destroyed the British Army’s reputation as neutral peacekeepers, and fueled a cycle of sectarian violence. As the Provisional IRA launched a bombing campaign targeting both military and civilian infrastructure, loyalist paramilitary groups like the UDA retaliated, leading to an apocalyptic escalation of death and destruction. By late 1971, the conflict had spiraled out of control, leaving the British government trapped in a quagmire of its own making while the death toll mounted rapidly.
