The Church Prevails

The question Jesus poses to his disciples at Caesarea Philippi—"Who do you say that I am?"—serves as the foundational inquiry of Christianity. Unlike other religious figures who emphasize their teachings or revelations, Jesus demands a recognition of his own nature. This identity remains the central focus of the Church, which continues to proclaim this truth across generations. The Church functions through a dual nature: the "Simon" dimension, which encompasses human fallibility, corruption, and historical scandal, and the "Petrine" dimension, which represents the enduring, divinely-guaranteed rock of faith. By maintaining this confession of who Jesus is, the Church persists through history, surviving the collapse of empires and the challenges of the ages, fulfilling the promise that the gates of the netherworld will not prevail against it.
