How I’m helping thousands rebuild their lives after prison | Susan Burton
TED Talks Daily
Compassionate listening serves as a catalyst for profound personal and systemic transformation, particularly for women trapped in cycles of addiction and incarceration. After the tragic loss of her son led to years of substance abuse and repeated prison sentences, Susan Burton discovered that being heard without judgment in an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting provided the necessary foundation for her own healing. This realization inspired her to establish "A New Way of Life," a housing project that offers formerly incarcerated women a safe environment to rebuild their lives. By scaling this model through the Sisterhood Alliance for Freedom and Equality (SAFE), she has helped thousands of women reunite with their families and stabilize their communities. Her work demonstrates that providing support and human connection is essential to breaking generational cycles of trauma and effectively reforming the criminal justice system.
