Short Stuff: Did a shipwreck double the size of the United States?

Podcast cover

Stuff You Should Know

The 1784 sinking of the *El Cazador* in the Gulf of Mexico served as a pivotal catalyst for the Louisiana Purchase. Carrying 19 tons of silver intended to stabilize the currency of the Spanish-controlled Louisiana colony, the ship's disappearance left the territory economically vulnerable. Spain’s subsequent struggle to maintain the region, combined with Napoleon’s loss of the profitable Haitian colony following the Haitian Rebellion, rendered the Louisiana territory strategically expendable for France. Thomas Jefferson capitalized on this shift, securing the entire territory for $15 million—a bargain at less than four cents an acre. This massive land acquisition, which effectively doubled the size of the United States, traces its origins back to the failed delivery of Spanish currency that might have otherwise solidified Spain's long-term presence in the region.
