
Sports fandom serves as a critical mechanism for meeting fundamental psychological needs, including belongingness, social identity, and a sense of meaning. Highly identified fans experience lower levels of loneliness and alienation, as the team acts as an extension of the self. While home field advantage is a well-substantiated phenomenon, research indicates it stems primarily from fan influence on officiating decisions rather than direct physiological impacts on players. Although sports betting has become increasingly integrated into the fan experience, it primarily increases engagement among existing fans rather than attracting new ones. Currently, sports fandom faces a demographic shift as younger generations, possessing more diverse entertainment options, are less likely to be socialized into traditional fan identities.
