Balcony solar and EVs are giving consumers a greater role in grid flexibility

Podcast cover

Energy Evolution

Decentralized home energy generation is shifting toward consumer-led solutions through plug-in solar and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies. Plug-in solar, or balcony solar, enables renters and apartment residents to reduce electricity loads by plugging small systems directly into standard outlets, a practice already widespread in Germany. Simultaneously, V2G technology leverages the substantial storage capacity of electric vehicle batteries—often 10 to 20 times larger than stationary home batteries—to provide reliable backup power and support grid stability during peak demand. While these innovations offer paths to energy independence and lower utility bills, they face regulatory challenges, including complex interconnection requirements and evolving safety standards like UL3700. As energy demand grows, these flexible, consumer-side resources are becoming essential tools for balancing the grid and mitigating the impact of rising energy costs and infrastructure limitations.
