How Poland Is Building a Renewable Power System - R.Power Renewables

Podcast cover

Transmission

Poland is rapidly transitioning from a coal-dominated energy system to one increasingly powered by renewables, with coal’s share of generation dropping from 95% to roughly 55% over the last decade. Tomasz Sek, founder and CEO of RPower, highlights that this shift creates significant opportunities for battery storage to stabilize the grid and manage price volatility caused by inflexible legacy coal plants. While the capacity market has been instrumental in incentivizing large-scale battery deployment, the market is evolving to better integrate both battery storage and gas peaking plants. Despite challenges like grid congestion and lengthy permitting processes, the sector remains highly entrepreneurial. Future energy security relies on hybrid power purchase agreements that combine solar and storage to provide a more flexible, cost-efficient energy profile, proving that a renewable-dominated system is both viable and economically competitive for Poland.
