The legend of Emperor Nero fiddling while Rome burned in AD 64 serves as a prime example of enduring ancient propaganda. While the fire destroyed 70% of the city and left half a million people homeless, historical evidence suggests Nero actively coordinated firefighting efforts and provided public shelter. The narrative of him playing a fiddle is chronologically impossible, as the instrument did not exist for another 1,500 years; he likely played the cithara, a stringed instrument of the era. Nero’s reputation suffered largely due to political tension with the Senate, which sought to assign blame for the catastrophe. To deflect accusations of government involvement, Nero scapegoated the burgeoning Christian community, initiating the first state-sanctioned persecution of the group. Ultimately, the emperor’s loss of military and political support led to his downfall and suicide four years later.
