OpenTelemetry has transitioned from an idealistic promise of vendor neutrality to a complex operational reality requiring rigorous governance. While the industry successfully stabilized traces, metrics, and logs between 2022 and 2025, the primary challenge in 2026 is managing the "day two" consequences of scale, such as configuration rot, performance regressions, and ambiguous ownership. The OpenTelemetry Collector functions as a critical boundary for policy and cost control rather than just a data router, necessitating intentional platform decisions regarding Kubernetes RBAC and security audits. Effective observability now depends on treating metrics, logs, and traces as distinct signals with different maturity levels rather than a monolithic solution. Ultimately, the long-term value of the standard is realized not through initial setup, but through simplified, "boring" configurations and clear organizational responsibility for the telemetry pipeline.
