Pursuing these narrow, self-serving goals sacrifices long-term stability and communal harmony, mirroring the biblical story of Cain, whose resentment over second-rate sacrifices led to fratricide. Conversely, maturity requires regulating impulses to serve broader, long-term objectives and adopting an "upward aim" characterized by radical reciprocity and truth-telling. Responsibility serves as the primary defense against tyranny; when individuals abdicate their duty to truth and community, they surrender their agency to external forces. Ultimately, the health of society depends on individuals who commit to sacrificial responsibility, as even a small number of truth-tellers can prevent societal collapse.
