Why we built the Baseten Frontier Gateway

The Baseten Frontier Gateway addresses the limitations of generalist AI models by facilitating the deployment of specialized models that smooth out the "jagged frontier" of performance. While the industry previously prioritized single, all-encompassing models, the current landscape features a "Cambrian explosion" of specialized labs driven by cost-effective post-training techniques and talent diffusion. This infrastructure layer provides a multi-tenant, scalable API that allows labs to monetize and distribute their models without the burden of building complex, underlying serving systems. By decoupling the gateway from inference, labs maintain high performance while focusing on research and business differentiation. The successful deployment of Poolside’s Laguna M model demonstrates how this infrastructure enables rapid scaling from on-premise prototypes to serving thousands of developers, effectively bridging the gap between research and commercial viability.
