Xuzhou is pioneering a sustainable cooling method by repurposing cold water from abandoned coal mines to regulate indoor temperatures. This closed-loop system utilizes 19-degree Celsius mine water to chill a separate circuit of clean water, which then flows through existing residential heating pipes to provide ground radiant cooling. By replacing traditional air conditioning, this approach reduces energy consumption by 50% and mitigates the urban heat island effect by eliminating the discharge of hot air into city streets. Although the system requires specialized dehumidifiers to manage indoor humidity and corrosion-resistant infrastructure for the mine water, a pilot program involving 100 households demonstrates its viability. Similar low-carbon initiatives, such as utilizing seawater or river water for district cooling, are gaining traction globally as cities seek alternatives to energy-intensive climate control.
