
The Federal Reserve faces a critical challenge in balancing its dual mandate of price stability and maximum employment as U.S. inflation remains persistently high. While unemployment is near historical lows, overall prices have surged over 20% in five years, significantly exceeding the 2% annual target. New Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is shifting the central bank's strategy by prioritizing inflation reduction and reducing forward guidance to maintain policy flexibility. However, recent inaction and a lack of clear communication have led markets to speculate that the Fed might be raising the bar for rate hikes or even redefining its inflation target. This uncertainty has triggered a steepening yield curve, a weaker U.S. dollar, and increased market sensitivity to incoming data. If inflation does not moderate in the second half of the year, the Fed will be forced to abandon its passive stance and implement more aggressive measures to maintain credibility.
