While early successes like the Shinkansen’s kingfisher-inspired nose or Mark Brunel’s shipworm-modeled tunneling shield demonstrate direct, effective application, other cases reveal a murkier relationship between biology and engineering. The Mercedes-Benz Bionic concept car, for instance, relied on flawed aerodynamic assumptions about the boxfish, serving more as a marketing tool than a functional design. Similarly, the long-standing association between hexagonal honeycomb structures and bee intelligence overlooks the iterative, emergent nature of how bees actually build. Modern research continues to refine these designs, showing that even established biomimetic solutions often require deeper, more nuanced biological understanding to achieve genuine structural or functional improvements.
