The Scary Things Kids Need to Tell Us

Podcast cover

Respectful Parenting: Janet Lansbury Unruffled

Children often express intense, alarming thoughts—such as fears about death or existential questions—as a way to process significant life transitions like moving or the arrival of a new sibling. Rather than attempting to "fix" these feelings or shut down the conversation with reassurance, parents should create a safe, non-judgmental space for their children to share. Accepting these emotions without trying to talk the child out of them allows the child to release pent-up stress and move through their grief naturally. When parents react with visible discomfort or urgency, children may feel their emotions are unsafe or unacceptable, leading them to repeat the behavior. By asking open-ended questions and simply listening, parents validate their child's experience, ultimately helping them navigate complex feelings and strengthening the parent-child bond through honest, open communication.
