301. Why Chinese AI needs to be taken more seriously

Podcast cover

The Rest Is Money

Chinese AI development is rapidly narrowing the gap with American labs, driven by an "efficiency moat" that compensates for limited access to high-end compute. Moonshot and other Chinese labs demonstrate that extreme efficiency in software development can yield competitive models despite export controls. Beyond hardware, the industry’s primary constraint is energy, as data centers now demand utility-scale power, straining electrical grids globally. While AI-related revenue has surged to $110 billion annually, the sector faces potential instability from speculative financing and aggressive capital expenditure. Azeem Azhar, founder of Exponential View, notes that while these investments currently track with revenue growth, the industry remains vulnerable to the same leverage-driven risks that triggered past financial crises. Despite these concerns, current banking capital levels provide a buffer that differentiates the present market from the 2008 collapse.
