The commercial battery comeback

Podcast cover

Catalyst with Shayle Kann

Commercial and Industrial (C&I) energy storage, historically stagnant compared to residential and utility-scale sectors, is entering a period of rapid growth driven by shifting economic incentives. Rising electricity rates and demand charges, coupled with new revenue streams like capacity markets and "Bring Your Own Capacity" (BYOC) programs for hyperscalers, are finally making C&I storage projects financially viable. Tim Hade, Senior Vice President at Voltus, highlights that while hardware costs have declined by 30-40%, the most significant barrier remains high soft costs, including customer acquisition and complex project development. AI-driven agentic tools are now reducing these transaction costs by automating repetitive workflows, while aggregation platforms enable smaller, individual battery projects to scale into virtual power plants capable of meeting the massive capacity needs of data centers. This evolution transforms C&I storage from a niche application into a critical grid resource.
