
Free will exists as a complex, emergent phenomenon rather than a simple illusion, despite neuroscientific evidence suggesting unconscious brain activity precedes conscious decision-making. Experiments by Benjamin Libet and later fMRI studies by John-Dylan Haynes demonstrate that brain signals can predict simple choices, such as pressing a button, seconds before a person reports making a conscious decision. However, these findings remain controversial, as they rely on simplistic tasks that may not reflect the nature of complex, long-term human choices. Theoretical physicist Sean Carroll argues that consciousness and choice function at a macroscopic level, analogous to how temperature or pressure emerges from the collective behavior of atoms. Consequently, the experience of making choices remains a valid reality, even if the underlying neural processes operate according to deterministic physical laws.
