Data centers are undergoing a critical architectural shift from copper wiring to fiber optics to meet the extreme bandwidth and speed requirements of modern AI infrastructure. Copper’s physical resistance and heat generation limit its efficacy at high speeds, necessitating a transition to light-based transmission. Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston highlights that this evolution requires massive scaling, moving from thousands of units to tens of millions. Unlike semiconductor companies that outsource manufacturing to TSMC, Lumentum operates its own specialized indium phosphide fabs, creating a significant supply bottleneck due to long lead times and high capital expenditure. Beyond terrestrial data centers, laser technology is increasingly vital for space-based internet connectivity. The next 12 months will likely see "optical scale-up" inside server racks, further cementing the industry's pivot toward optical solutions as the primary backbone of global data infrastructure.
