Digital News Report 2026. Episode 7: The social impact of public service news

Podcast cover

Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism

Public service media’s social impact remains a complex, polarized issue across 26 global markets. While 37% of audiences perceive a positive effect, 22% report negative views, with a significant 35% remaining indifferent. Trust in news and consistent engagement with public service broadcasters serve as primary predictors of positive sentiment, as seen in high-performing markets like Norway. Conversely, political polarization significantly influences perceptions; individuals on the political right often express greater skepticism toward public service news, frequently citing concerns over political influence. Across all demographics, the perception of independence from government interference is the most critical factor for public service media’s credibility. To improve public trust, broadcasters must prioritize accessibility and relevance, while policy makers must ensure a clear, demonstrable separation between political actors and media output to mitigate fears of undue influence.
