Episode 227 - ARB's Changes to Registration

The Architects Registration Board (ARB) is introducing a streamlined registration assurance process by spring 2027 to provide clearer, more proportionate pathways for non-standard applicants. While the traditional route for UK-trained architects remains intact, significant structural changes are underway. The Part 1 prescribed examination will cease in October 2026, shifting toward a direct assessment of knowledge and skills. Simultaneously, the UK Adaption Assessment for international applicants will be replaced by a new "Readiness for Practice UK" online module. These reforms specifically target individuals with partial qualifications, those returning to the register after an absence, and practitioners who previously failed to register. The core competence standard for architects remains unchanged, but the mechanisms for demonstrating that standard are evolving to emphasize direct evidence of professional capability over rigid qualification mapping.
