Polyvagal Theory: Why You Feel So Anxious All The Time - Dr Stephen Porges - #1128
Modern Wisdom
Polyvagal Theory posits that underlying physiological states fundamentally dictate human perception, social engagement, and resilience. The autonomic nervous system acts as a surveillance mechanism, constantly scanning the environment for signals of safety or threat. Mammals uniquely evolved to use prosodic voices, facial expressions, and rhythmic cues to broadcast safety, facilitating co-regulation and social connection. When trauma—whether emotional or pathogenic, such as long COVID—disrupts this system, the body may become locked in a chronic defensive state, compromising the ability to access higher-level capacities. Restoring autonomic flexibility requires targeted interventions like acoustic stimulation, resonant breathing, and metabolic support to signal safety to the nervous system. By shifting from a state of defense to one of homeostasis, individuals can expand their window of tolerance, enabling deeper empathy, curiosity, and the capacity for meaningful social interaction.
