New bar aims to teach foreigners about Japanese bar culture

The Asakusa neighborhood of Tokyo, famous for the Sensoji Temple, hosts a unique dive bar named "Not Suspicious" that serves as a cultural bridge between international tourists and Japan's often exclusive local bar scene. Established in 2020 by Nori Hasegawa, known as Sakura, the bar counters the trend of "Japanese only" establishments by offering English menus and a welcoming atmosphere for foreigners. The intimate space, which fits only 15 to 20 people, fosters a sense of community where travelers and expats like Filip Zajlik can build local networks and friendships. Featuring a signature "suspicious shot" with a secret recipe and staff like Kengo Kishi who enjoy practicing English, the bar provides an authentic yet accessible experience of Japanese drinking culture, transforming a sketchy-looking side-street venue into a meaningful pilgrimage site for global visitors.
