Andrew Ng and David S. Goyer: Creativity, Intelligence, and What We’re building Toward.
Berggruen Institute
AI development is currently caught between hyperbolic extinction narratives and its practical utility as a productivity tool. Fear-mongering often stems from corporate PR strategies or attempts at regulatory capture rather than immediate existential threats. While AI can automate specific tasks, it remains a complement to human labor rather than a wholesale replacement, with data showing only a tiny fraction of job losses are directly attributable to the technology. The current landscape highlights the importance of open-weight models to prevent market gatekeeping by a few dominant firms, a space where international competition is intensifying. Ultimately, AI serves as an accelerator for creative and technical workflows, provided that humans remain in the lead to curate, verify, and direct the output, ensuring that the technology enhances rather than replaces human expertise.
