How to Stop Your Inner Voice From Spiraling (A Slight Change of Plans)
Proxy with Yowei Shaw
Chatter—the repetitive, negative inner monologue—often traps individuals in unproductive thought loops that consume attention, impair performance, and exacerbate chronic stress. Successfully managing this mental state requires shifting from emotional immersion to cognitive distancing. Techniques such as using the "universal you," referring to oneself in the third person, or engaging in mental time travel to gain historical perspective help broaden one's view and foster objective reasoning. When seeking support, venting to others is most effective when the listener eventually pivots from empathetic validation to active reframing. Additionally, immersing oneself in nature or experiencing awe provides a sense of scale, helping to diminish the perceived magnitude of personal anxieties. By intentionally harnessing these tools, individuals can transform their inner voice from a source of distress into a productive resource for navigating life's challenges.
