#400 ‒ AMA #87: Environmental pollution and longevity: air pollution, noise, light, EMFs, and practical strategies to mitigate health risks

Podcast cover

The Peter Attia Drive

Environmental pollution—defined as the introduction of harmful substances or energy like air, noise, light, and electromagnetic fields—presents complex challenges for longevity. Assessing these risks is difficult because randomized controlled trials are ethically and logistically impossible, leading to reliance on observational data characterized by small hazard ratios and significant confounding variables. While these exposures contribute to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, they remain secondary to fundamental health pillars such as sleep, nutrition, and exercise. Rather than attempting to eliminate all environmental risks, which is impractical, the focus should be on identifying high-yield, modifiable interventions. Distinguishing between significant threats and overstated concerns is essential, as many environmental impacts are cumulative and multifactorial, requiring a pragmatic approach that prioritizes resources toward the most impactful, actionable changes for long-term health.
